Prescribing Policy - Diazepam for Non-medical Indications

This policy outlines the procedure for to the prescribing of Diazepam for Non-medical Indications

Salisbury Medical Practice Policy

Dental: If a patient requests Diazepam for a dental procedure they will be directed back to their dentist. Dentists are able to prescribe this directly (and it is safest if they do so as they will then be aware of what the patient has taken so as to avoid any interactions with other medications administered during the procedure).

MRI Scans: As discussed with the Radiology department at Salisbury District Hospital, if a patient is being prescribed a dose of Diazepam ahead of an MRI scan, they will be told to attend 30 minutes early, and to notify the department when checking-in that they are about to take Diazepam, and the dose that they are taking. They should be advised to have someone accompany them to the appointment to assist them, and to drive them home afterwards.

Flying / Travel: We do not provide Diazepam for fear of flying or other travel. Patients are welcome to seek the opinion of a private GP if they still wish to request a prescription for this purpose. We would also advise speaking to your pharmacist about alternatives that can be bought over the counter.
